Decline and Fall of the United States?

March 15th, 2008 by karen

When the history of this time is written, will it go something like this?

The 2oth century is sometimes called “the American century.” Economically and militarily, the United States became the most powerful nation in the world.

But, despite the urging of scientists and economists, the U.S. was slower than almost any other industrialized nation to grasp the importance of the defining features of the 21st century: climate change and the end of cheap oil. In an election emblematic of this failure, a Texas oil man was elected president in 2000 over Al Gore, who later won a Nobel Prize for his work on climate change.

And if you don’t think that the tornadoes that have ravaged Georgia the last few days are not emblematic of climate change, you’ve been drinking the Koolaid.

Discuss.
