Residents fight to save access to Jekyll Beach

February 26th, 2008 by karen

bikekpath.jpg The Savannah Morning News reports that the battle over Jekyll Island’s redevelopment returns to the legislature. Residents and lawmakers who support legislation sponsored by Sen. Jeff Chapman, R-Brunswick are trying to preserve the island’s historic role as a holiday retreat for ordinary Georgians. The developer, Linger Longer Communities, wants to build a large condo/hotel complex that would restrict beach access opposite the present shopping center on the island. At the moment, this area is pathways like the one photographed, a parking lot, and a restaurant–very easy for people to reach the beach. Imagine that area covered with condos and hotels.Unhappily, those working on Linger Longer’s side of this fight are a bunch of yellow dog democrats who have sold their birthright for a mess of potage.
