The Savannah Morning News reports that the battle over Jekyll Island’s redevelopment returns to the legislature. Residents and lawmakers who support legislation sponsored by Sen. Jeff Chapman, R-Brunswick are trying to preserve the island’s historic role as a holiday retreat for ordinary Georgians. The developer, Linger Longer Communities, wants to build a large condo/hotel complex that would restrict beach access opposite the present shopping center on the island. At the moment, this area is pathways like the one photographed, a parking lot, and a restaurant–very easy for people to reach the beach. Imagine that area covered with condos and hotels.Unhappily, those working on Linger Longer’s side of this fight are a bunch of yellow dog democrats who have sold their birthright for a mess of potage.
