I’m a Values Voter

November 12th, 2007 by ka

I’m a “values” voter, and have voted in every election - partisan, non-partisan, national, statewide and local - since I was able to vote in 1968.  And all of those votes, good, bad and sometimes unenthusiastic, have been based on my values.

But they’ve also been based on paying attention to the issues, educating myself about them and making the best choices that I could about how government affects really important issues like education, the economy, and the quality of life for everyone in my neighborhood, my state, my nation and the world.

My values are not always the same as others.  I don’t “vet” candidates based on their stand on one or two issues, or their religion.  As a “values” voter, I look at what they can do to make all of our lives better - not just the few - and not just those who agree with me on almost everything.

But maybe my “values” are too simple.  Faith in family and friends, belief that I am not the moral judge of others, and a sincere desire to see life in this world get better for everybody’s grandkids - not just my own.
