This, I think, is one of the best pieces I’ve read in the Savannah Morning News for a long time. An excellent analysis of the election results. Golden opportunities | SavannahNow.com
Some highlights:
SAVANNAH MAYOR Otis Johnson said that Tuesday’s election would be a referendum on his leadership and the “team” that includes a working majority on City Council.
It was more like a blowout by a Johnson juggernaut.
And I hadn’t thought of this racial aspect of the election, but I think it is very true:
One of the most positive outcomes in Tuesday’s election concerns race and its reduced role in local politics. Mayor Johnson, who’s black, did well in precincts with a lot of white voters. Mr. Felser, who’s white, also ran citywide and did well in precincts that were majority black.
Both races offered black candidates and white candidates. Yet majorities of voters apparently paid more attention to qualifications than skin color. In a diverse community, such colorblind thinking bodes well for the future.
